UFC: Conor McGregor: The highest-earning athlete in 2021

Conor McGregor debuted in the UFC back in 2013 and has since gone on to become a household name for his efforts in the octagon, which has now seen him become the highest-earning athlete in 2021.

The 33-year-old’s earnings see him earn more per minute than the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

According to research from Ladbrokes, McGregor earned a phenomenal 6.2 million pounds per minute during 2021, which is streets ahead of other fighters in the UFC.

It is important to note that the findings were calculated on the basis that his fights lasted three minutes on average.

McGregor lost his two fights against Dustin Poirier on January 24, 2021, and the rematch on July 11, 2021, but he had the last laugh in terms of earnings for the year.

Where do other athletes rank?

Given the quick nature of MMA – fights can be over very quickly – it can be easy to understand how McGregor tops the list of highest earners per minute in 2021.

When considering other similar sports, like boxing for example, it is a similar situation.

This is how Canelo Alvarez came second in the rankings, earning 323,000 pounds per minute that he spent in the ring during 2021.

Third on the list was Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, who often ranks highly on the earnings due to his experience in the sport and his undeniable talent, which wins matches and trophies.

During 2021, Brady earned 27,000 pounds per minute spent on the field.

Do any footballers make the list?

Yes, there are two footballers who earned the fourth and fifth most per minute when compared to other athletes in the world.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar earned 23,000 pounds per minute that he played football.

Manchester United and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo made it onto the list too, finishing fifth whilst earning just over 13,000 pounds per minute during 2021, a year which saw him leave Juventus and return to Old Trafford.
