Remember Anna Delvey, that scammer who made headlines for defrauding ultra-wealthy New Yorkers by posing as a German heiress? Now she’s played by Julia Garner in the upcoming Netflix series Inventing Anna, which released its official trailer today.
Created by fellow girlboss Shonda Rhimes, Inventing Anna is based on Jessica Pressler’s 2018 New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People — and its Banks.” Anna Chlumsky costars as Vivian, a reporter who becomes obsessed with figuring out Anna’s story. Is she New York’s biggest con woman, or some new portrait of the American dream? As the trailer puts it: “This story is completely true, except for the parts that are totally made up.”
As Anna and Vivian form a twisted bond of their own while Anna awaits trial, Vivian races against the clock to answer the question on everyone’s minds: Who the hell is Anna Delvey, anyway?
The series also stars Arian Moayed, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm, Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, Terry Kinney, and Laverne Cox.
Rhimes also serves as showrunner, making Inventing Anna the first series she’s writtten, created, and run since Scandal ended in 2018. Directors include David Frankel, Tom Verica, Daisy Von Scherler Mayer, Ellen Kuras, and Nzingha Stewart. Rhimes, Matt Byrne, Jess Brownell, Abby Ajayi, and Nick Nardini are writers. Additionally, Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Tom Verica, and David Frankel serve as executive producers.
Inventing Anna premieres on Netflix on Feb. 11, 2022.
